The 29th Ethiopian Teachers Association (ETA) Annual Council meeting was held from Nov. 7-9/2016 in Bahir Dar City, capital of Amhara Regional State. Mr. Yohannes Benti, President of ETA welcomed the participants and invited guest of honor to open the meeting. HE Ato Tefera Feyissa, deputy head of Amhara Regional State Education Bureau, has delivered opening speech.

Ato Tefere Feyisa, while opening the council, in his speech, said that “Ethiopia is on the right track of Education and other development activities but some illegal actions against the constitution have affected the provision of education in the country. ETA is then professionally responsible to advise its members and the education community to stand against those illegal actions which has an impact on education and rights of its members. This is in away promoting peaceful teaching-learning process in the school to enhance fast development and to ensure good governance at country level.

World Teachers’ Day 2016 Celebrated in Debre Markos University PDF Print E-mail

Ethiopian Teachers Association has been celebrating World Teachers’ Day every year by organizing different occasions in collaboration with universities. This year, World Teacher’s Day was organized in Debre Markos University form Nov. 3-4/2016. The University’s Teachers’ Association and university administration took the role to organize the event. The year marks a unique event since 50 years has passed since the 1916 UNESCO/ILO recommendation concerning the status of Teachers was adopted. Therefore both recommendations, the 1966 and the recommendation concerning the status of higher education teaching personnel of the year 1997 were highlighted in the presence of officials and conference participants.

On the occasion participants and stakeholders were invited. Those participants were primary and secondary school teachers from Debre Markos City and staff of Debre Markos University, Regional Teachers’ Association representative’s, Ministry of Education and UNESCO liaison office representatives. The conference were held in Dr. Hadis Alemayehu’s meeting Hall in the main campus of Debre Markos University.

On the first day, program introduction was made by president of Debre Markos University Teachers’ Association, Mr. Assaye Demelash, followed by Ethiopian Teachers Association President’s welcome speech. The conference was officially opened by HE Dr. Nigusie Mitiku, President of Debre Markos University. In his speed he said “to achieve the 2nd Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP), teachers are the main weapon to shape the young citizen in knowledge, skill and attitude”.


ETA Succeeded in increasing career ladder and in provision of housing for teachers PDF Print E-mail

Ethiopian Teachers Association (ETA) has been requesting for improvement of salary scale and career ladder as well as for provision of housing for teachers since seven years. After so many discussions and negotiations on those issues with concerned authorities notably, the Prime Minister and Minister of Education of the Federal Democratic of Ethiopia, the government has decided to increase salary scale of teachers from pre-primary up to higher education academic staff. The improvement is not only an increase in salary scale but resulted in increasing the career ladder of general education teachers from seven to nine which makes their level equal to that of the other civil servants. 

Workshop on Hearing Our Stories (HOS) held PDF Print E-mail

Hearing Our Stories (HOS) is the first step of Gender at Work’s Gender Action Learning, a cyclical process that enables regular institutional reflection, learning and collective action on gender. This workshop aimed to engage participants in a reflective process on their union’s journey in order to help them understand the broader context in which they are working, to inform their change/ action experiment towards addressing School Related Gender Based Violence. It was expected that at the end of the workshop, the union would identify a ‘change team’ responsible for carrying out the project forward, translating all the project learning into effective and scalable experiments.

The 28th Annual Council meeting of Ethiopian Teachers Association (ETA) was held in Oromia regional state in Robe city form Oct 5-7/2015 in Abagelma meeting hall. The guest of honor, Mr. Mamo Bogale, Deputy head of Oromia Regional State Educational Bureau has delivered an opening speech. In his speech he said that, Ethiopian Teachers Association is the oldest association established in the history of Ethiopia. It not only stands for benefits and rights of teachers but also it leads its members on the right track to play their role for the development of Ethiopia. He added that Oromia Education Bureau in collaboration with Oromia Teachers’ Association tries to address teachers’ requests concerned with rights, benefits, and education quality issues including governance in the education system.
